The critics of Applepay cite the failure of other mobile payment systems to gain traction. One lost-soul-blind visionary wrote you will still need your wallet to carry your driver's license. He obviously does not get it. He reminds me of a fish with a big mouth and small eyes.
Additionally, the critics cite as supporting evidence that Google wallet did not make it and list other analogous thwarted attempts at safely cracking the mobile payments vault.
I remember when I lived in Silicon Valley, Drexel Technologies worked on the concept for several years and eventually gave up and that was in 1990. Timing is everything. You may know that the credit card companies have until October15, 2015 to include a security chip in your credit card to enable secure mobile payments as is currently done in many other countries. My VISA credit card does not have it yet, but I understand that US Bank does. If your card has it, there will be a small chip icon visible on the card. When you travel outside the US, you need a credit card with a chip in it to charge stuff.
Applepay is just the entry level application for the new iPhone. Of course, it eventually will contain your drivers license and a lot more.
List everything you need to live and it will be an app on your secure iPhone.
