Why do candidates from Texas feel compelled to act like the popular caricature image of a quick draw gunslinger? Because that is what Texans like. And many republicans do too. When asked about his potshot blast accusing target Bernanke of potential treason, Perry did not back down.
When questioned later, Perry reiterated his comment that in these economic times printing more money is a "treasonable offense." Doubling down on your bet, not backing down when the dealer draws an Ace, is another characteristic that Republicans like. In some circles it is called, sticking to your guns. In casinos, it is called playing the long odds. Losers play that game a lot.
Remember? Who do you want answering the phone at 3:30 A.M. in the morning? They did what? "Shoot the bastards down," said quick draw McGraw. "I am going back to sleep." Americans admire quick acting, Toby Keith style politically charged lyrics, such as "We"ll put a boot in your ass, it's the American way." I love to sing that song too. Unfortunately, for Perry, Americans vote for security, thoughtfulness and temperance in its leaders.
Perry has all the characteristics of a Ronald Reagan except several. Alright, you got me. Perry was not a movie star either. Perry lacks the Reagan style authenticity that comes from repeating classic lines in front of a camera. And that authenticity only comes from doing your homework before you speak. Perry is a "fire, fire, fire" candidate at a time when "ready, aim, fire" is still the accepted preparation for action.
We like our movie star heros to be quick on the draw with fast, daring, threatening, slashing verbal counter-attacks on the bad guys. In real life, Americans prefer their leaders to use reasonable caution in how they treat other people. It's a golden rule or something.
Sticks and stones may break your bones, but words will circle around to haunt you.
