The firing of two Air Force officers in charge of our Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) programs has risen to the top of commentators' reports. What caught my attention was the fact that America still has approximately 1,500 ICBMs ready to go. That is enough firepower to cause a remake of the Dr. Strangelove movie.
According to what I read, America still has an agreement with Russia to reduce the number of active ICBMs over the next several years. The more missiles that are active the more likely is a scenario that one could be fired accidentally. I am also concerned that the military will make the launch-code a smarten app. The air force management issues heighten the awareness that we have fragile systems of people and machines.
As soon as the health care news and budget issues blowup, I am betting the ICBM story will be the headliner. My thought is cut the ICBM program down to 10 ICBMs and save a basket of taxpayer money. I believe 10 ICBMs is enough to destroy a country or two, don't you? Maybe 5 would do it? And realistically is America genuinely concerned that we need any ICBMs as a deterrent to an attack on America?
As the biggest importer of foreign goods, who would kill the golden goose?
