Home Depot is in a world of hurt. The department of Justice (DOJ) has accused them of providing Chinese-made products in violation of the Buy American Act. Whoa Mr. Webtalk why are you picking on China again? I am not. I am raising the issue of massive hypocrisy on the part of the Feds. I know I will be accused of an over simplification of the accusation, but the investigation announcement itself is enough to get my dander up about the lack of fair trade practices for American firms. There is a good chance that this investigation was reported using a smartphone or a PC made in China. What do you bet?
Obama should call DOJ tomorrow and get the particulars. I am sure there are many fine distinctions between what Home Depot is doing and Wal-Mart and the hundreds of other firms that sell Chinese-made products. I have personal experience with the Buy American act and it is a nightmare for the best lawyer to interpret.
The Buy American Act was passed in 1933 to protect American jobs. Since that time it has been amended and reamended so many times, I doubt if anyone remembers the circumstances of its original passage or even if it is really relevant in an age where we import $100 billion of products from China each year from toys to personal computers to smartphones.
Why should you even care? Because China is going to become a major issue in the upcoming election and Jon Huntsman is the only candidate that understands all the issues. Obama has two hands that go in different directions. His economic policies enable China to beat the socks off of American manufacturing then he punishes American firms, like Home Depot, for purchasing and selling Chinese-made products. What the right hand giveth the left hand taketh away. Or in the case of Obama both hands taketh away.
He had his chance and we now need new leadership. Obama tried. He failed. He can get another job.
Get on the Huntsman bandwagon early. It is going to be a fun ride.
