The film Spotlight is worth seeing.
However, it shook the foundation of my Catholic education and catechism teaching. Not that my beliefs have not already been shattered a time or two by Catholic dogma because it has.
The film is an emotional earthquake for people like me that have been raised Catholics. It challenges the almighty, practically irrational trust that Catholics have in priests. It demands a response by the Catholic church, but a response is unlikely. If you see the film, stay for the credits where the breath of this virus is exposed.
I saw it last night and it still makes me shiver this morning. At one time, I believed in Santa Claus too. Now I still like Santa, but I know he is not real, merely a tradition that provides family togetherness. Catholic clergy will argue that Spotlight is not representative of priests, but the issue of genuine celibacy and Catholic dogma that requires celibacy as a condition of the priesthood is questionable, now and forever amen.
The film begs for people to use common senses and to not look the other way when faced with obvious potential tragedies. No one wishes to rock the boat until often it is too late. Read the news lately?
