Obama has announced a major jobs “speech” scheduled for right after labor day. It will be a moving, emotion filled speech, staccato marked with sincere pleas to save America with the Obama plan. Despite the fact that Obama has never released his Harvard transcript, he must have received an A in speech writing and delivering. The first time I heard him I was encouraged. Now that I have heard him numerous times, the edge has left the rhetoric. It has not been replaced by a thespian's misplaced admiration for his beautiful delivery, but it has been replaced by an indisputable disgust for his serious lack of action. He refuses to accept the fact he has done nothing to encourage American investment or protect American jobs.
I will listen to his jobs speech and for a few minutes, I will be hopeful. The market will likely rise a few hundred points on the hope, then drop back down a few days later on the reality.
In that speech, according to officials who are always anonymous, Obama will reveal his plan to put people back to work. (Frankly, if he has a plan why wait, the 20 million unemployed could use it now.) It is my understanding, he intends to (i) Extend unemployment benefits to the chronically unemployed-now that is a job creator, (ii) Extend the payroll tax cut extension-another serious job starter, and (iii) Patent reform. Patent reform? I am sure, is a job creator and first on every business person’s list. The three of these items put together only create jobs for people to explain how in the world these notions are serious suggestions to create jobs.
Obama will almost certainly revise his “infrastructure bank” plan and simply send money to the states to build some roads and bridges. The states, anticipating this unjust enrichment, will of course delay the roads and bridges, it was going to build anyway, until they get the Fed money. Net effect? Nothing. Eventually, a few bridges and roads will get built with Fed money instead of state money. The impact of this Obama proposal is actually to delay the release of state construction funds until the Feds release the Fed funds, meaning no impact for a few years. Under Obama’s plan, Americans will still be driving on the same roads and bridges they have now through 2013 at best.
I believe that Obama already knows that the 12 person super-committee will fail to present a deficit reduction plan by Thanksgiving - the turkey cut deadline. And despite the big agreement, no one will cut military spending or social security. Obama’s new plan is to resurrect another plan.
Remember the old Mighty Mouse cartoon lyric, "Here I come to save the day,” a phrase later made even more famous on SNL in 1975 by Andy Kaufman. The funny part is Kaufman, seldom sang the tune, he lip-synced the lyrics. I have heard so many Obama speeches that I feel the same way-I could lip-sync the rhetoric.
Obama’s speech themes are tired, old, rundown, hackneyed, and ubiquitous and do not expect him to save the day.
Where is Huntsman? I believe he is adopting the leadership technique of Eisenhower and allowing Patton, in the guise of Perry, to wage the war. A true leader knows his limitations.
