Conversations that I would like to hear.

This conversation is hopefully taking place at Bank of America, Cisco and many other American businesses.

“Jane will you come into my office for a moment?” “Jane, I can not tell you how sorry I am, but we are reducing our budget and I will have to let you go. You have done a fine job here at the bank."
"I will give you an excellent recommendation. It’s only business so Jane please do not take it personal.”
“Harvey,” Jane asked, “why should I take it personal?”
“My rent is due tomorrow. My kids need braces. My car needs new tires. I have worked long hours at the bank to show my dedication. I have been  a real team player and you have told me on many occasions what an excellent employee I am. In fact, Harvey I have several letters you wrote me complimenting me on my performance. Harvey, it’s truly personal.”
“And Harvey,” Jane continued, “Why would I interpret being fired, laid-off, downsized, staff reduced, cut from the budget or any other word, phrase or idiom that you wish to use to characterize my present situation as personal?" Asked Jane.
"I am being cut off from my only source of livelihood. Harvey it most certainly is personal,” said Jane emphatically.
“Harvey, you said it was only business. I have heard this phrase many times before. What does it’s only business mean?”
"It means ......., I really don't know what it means," said Harvey.
"It is personal and I have no one to bail me out,"  interrupted Jane. "I am too small to be bailed out."
"I apologize Jane, but it is Obama's fault," replied Harvey.
"Harvey can I get a small loan to tide me over? After all the interest rate is lower than ever, and the bank, thanks to the Fed bailout program, has plenty of cash?" Asked Jane.
"I would, Jane, but you would have to show proof of employment," said Harvey.

The sound of silence.
