Groundhog Day Revisited

I have watched the film-Groundhog day-more than a dozen times. This morning, nestled in my bed in Rancho Mirage CA with the rain pouring down outside effectively canceling today's golf and tennis, I believe I finally get it. I mean I understand the Groundhog day message. There was an important message embedded beneath the clever story and Bill Murray's comedic deadpan antics. Now you may have already understood the message so it could be just my age which defies the obvious, but so be it. The film's message was "make every day" count. Simple but so complex. At first Murray, woke up each day and was bored, bothered and annoyed by the same old-same old every day. He tried to kill himself that did not work. He tried just being a jerk that was not satisfying. He tried not caring, but was unable to not care.
Then almost miraculously, he tried making every day count. He took piano lessons. He helped the homeless. He changed a person's tire. He caught the young boy falling from the tree. And yes he even bought life insurance. And what is more he did the same wonderful things in a happy mood with a positive attitude each and every day.Once Murray learned to make every day count, or as I say "make every day matter," he found love and lived happily ever after. It is a marvelous story with a timeless message that eventually we all understand. I am sure most of you already understood the film's message. I did not. I do now-and I am off to make every day matter. I started today with this blog. I hope the next time you watch Groundhog Day, the film motivates you like it has me.
