PHOTOPLETHYSMOGRAPHY AND THE IWATCH

The iWatch is designed to watch more than just the time of day. It will watch many other things using blinking LEDs and a technology that has been around for awhile in hospital based devices, but is now built into a consumer device.

The technology is Photoplethysmography. It is an optically obtained volumetric measurement of an organ by illuminating the skin with LEDs and measuring the light transmitted or reflected.

A few years ago, I wrote a book that unknowingly touched on this technology, where a person's DNA is determined by analyzing a person's skin molecules that are given off each day. Now, the iWatch has not moved into DNA analysis, but it has opened up a whole new world of electronic health monitoring.

The iWatch is using this new technology for heart rate monitoring and possibly other things. As usual, an Apple computing device is more than just a simple name.

Stay tuned for more.
