How do you educate?

My good friend in Utah wrote me about how he educates his children. Take a read and maybe you will get an idea. Here it is word for word below.

I'm always asking my kids what they are teaching in school.  Recently my son said they were learning about Islam.  I told him that when I was in school they also taught me about the great Religions of the world, and Islam was one of them.  They candy coated it back then, and didn't say anything bad.  I asked him if they were saying anything bad about Islam.  He said no.

I told my son that I'd show him what they are afraid to teach in schools, because it is uncomfortable, kind of like the other side of the story.  I had previously seen some lectures on Islam from a Scientist who had spent many years studying this.  I had my son watch this lecture...

The next day he came to me and asked if he could see that lecture again, and watched it a second time.  And then we watched together a second interview with the same Scientist...

Anyway, I'm always trying to give some perspective on what the schools are teaching, and I continue to do this even though we've got our kids in a great private school, that they love to go to.  I'm not saying I have the answers, I just get tried of everyone trying to be nice all the time, and avoiding whatever is uncomfortable.
