Chinese leadership explains it.

The following is reprinted with the permission of Rosemary Coates, President Bluesilk Consulting. She is the author of  42 Rules for Sourcing and Manufacturing in China (a Top Seller at Amazon.com).

I have never met Rosemary, but I have read her comments on China. She knows what she talks about.

It's just a matter of time until China regains its leadership position in the world (ala 16th-17th Centuries) in terms of math, science, creating new products, etc.  Within our lifetime we will see consumer products that have been designed for the preferences of Westerners, become global products designed for the preferences of Asians, and we will have to live with that.  We will see Chinese leadership in most all categories.

It's also interesting to note that the US government leadership is mostly made up of lawyers, while the Chinese government is practically all engineers.  This flavors the strategies and approaches China takes as it continues to industrialize and lift its population out of poverty. It also has important impact on the emphasis China places on education in math and science.

On the other hand, the Chinese have a long way to go.  I visited a machine shop (State-owned Enterprise SOE) near 5th Ring Road in Beijing 2 weeks ago (see attached photo).  We were greeted by the general manger and then he disappeared to take a phone call.  We were left to wander the plant with no escort, no eye protection, no shoe protection, etc.  This was apparently no problem, as they do this all the time.  I was allowed to take as many pictures as I wanted, but when I saw metal scraps flying off machines, I backed out of the shop for fear of getting hurt.  Places like this remind me that world standards are very different from US standards and the climb for the Chinese will be long and steep.
