Sometimes the only way "up" is to start.

April 23, 2010

Everyday, I play a word game with a few friends called “Words with Friends.” It is scrabble played on your iPad or your iPhone. I play it on my iPad and I love the game. It is fun to learn new words like Qi or Xi. Even more fun to amuse your friends, with your newly acquired knowledge, by using these new words in casual sentences. Sure! Seriously, what I love best about the game is the process.

The process for me goes something like this. If I stare at my letters, nothing happens. But if I start arranging the letters in different patterns in different places, a light will flash and a word will emerge from the chaos of letters. It happens every time. The more patterns I try, the quicker the light flashes with a great word. The key is to trust the process and not merely sit and stare at the letters hoping a word will suddenly appear. It usually does not.

Success is embedded in the process of “trying” new patterns. The process, of rearranging the letters at different places on my iPad almost in a willy-nilly fashion, is the action that produces the light flash. It always reminds me of the old saying, “Nothing succeeds like persistence,” or “Nothing is more common than unrewarded genius.” It is action that creates the result. Today you and 10,000 other people will have a great idea.

One person will act on it. Is that you?
