Join me in my war against So.
I am waging a personal vendetta against the word “so.” It is my latest avocation. My mission is to eliminate the word so from all writing, but it is so difficult. Excuse me, it is very difficult. Not much better. Excuse me again – it is difficult. I am so pleased to see you. We were scared so we ran away. I liked her so much. And so on.
The war began because of a novel I am writing. I noticed that I used the word so; so many times it was meaningless. It became so redundant. Yet so, it still seemed so powerful. I loved her so much. And so on.
I checked the Synonyms for so. There are so many synonyms, such as, consequently, as a result, thus, therefore, subsequently, accordingly and hence. So is powerful. Yet, it is such a simple word with only two letters that pack a powerful punch.
For example, the night was dark, we could not see. Not bad. But now consider. The night was “so” dark we could not see. Notice that with the word so, the night becomes a lot darker.
From a purely philosophical viewpoint, so is a great example of letter synergism. Each letter by itself has virtually no meaning. S is meaningless. O is usually meaningless. But what a synergistic team S and O make together. I can not think of another two letter word that has more power than the word so. Can you? And so on.
What?
So what?
